Almost every bathroom remodeling company will tell you your project comes with a warranty. Far fewer will tell you, in plain language, what that warranty actually covers. If you're comparing quotes for a tub-to-shower conversion or a full bathroom renovation in Charlotte, NC, it's worth understanding the difference between the warranty language in a sales pitch and the warranty that's actually written down.

Workmanship warranty vs. product warranty

These are two different things, and it's easy to assume one covers the other. A product or manufacturer warranty covers defects in the materials themselves, like a shower base that cracks from a factory flaw. It comes from the manufacturer, not the company that installed it, and the terms vary by product. A workmanship warranty is separate. It covers the installation itself, meaning the labor and how the materials were put together. This is the warranty a remodeling company controls directly, and it's the one worth asking the most questions about.

What a workmanship warranty typically covers

  • Leaks caused by installation error β€” a seal, seam, or connection that wasn't installed correctly and allows water behind the wall or through the floor.
  • Fixtures or panels that come loose due to how they were mounted or secured, rather than misuse.
  • Caulking or sealant failures tied to how the joint was originally prepped and sealed, within the warranty period.
  • Doors, tracks, or hardware that don't operate correctly because of how they were installed or aligned.

What it typically does not cover

A written workmanship warranty usually excludes normal wear and tear, damage caused by other trades or unrelated home repairs, and problems caused by how the space is used or maintained, like harsh cleaning chemicals that degrade a surface faster than intended. It also generally won't cover damage from a separate plumbing issue elsewhere in the home, or pre-existing conditions in the walls or subfloor that weren't part of the original scope of work. This is exactly why an honest company will tell you what's excluded, not just what's included.

Questions worth asking before you sign anything

  • Is the workmanship warranty in writing, and can I get a copy before I sign a contract?
  • How many years does it cover, and does that number apply to the whole project or just certain parts of it?
  • Is the warranty transferable if I sell my home?
  • Who do I actually call if something comes up, and how quickly does that get addressed?
  • Is the product warranty handled separately, and do I need to register anything with the manufacturer myself?

A company that's confident in its work will answer these plainly, without steering the conversation back to the sales pitch.
